This April, Christie’s Paris celebrates the artistic avant-garde with five major sales retracing the evolution of 20th-century art movements.
The week opens with the Collection Lise et Roland Funck-Brentano – Un plaidoyer pour la modernité, a remarkable ensemble reflecting the visionary eye and deep commitment to the artists of the 20th century of these renowned legal figures. Their passion for abstract and kinetic art is evident in this selection, featuring works by Hans Hartung, Alexander Calder, Auguste Herbin, and Victor Vasarely, including six previously unseen pieces. Two standout lots will define this sale: a stunning wood relief by Sophie Taeuber-Arp and a 1954 oil on canvas by Pierre Soulages.

Next, the Ancienne Collection Henri Canonne – Une leçon impressionniste will highlight a pivotal chapter in the movement’s history. A bold collector, Canonne assembled an extraordinary array of masterpieces by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, including La Leçon d’écriture, the centrepiece of this sale. This occasion will bring back into the spotlight rare masterpieces that have remained out of public view for over 80 years, embodying the prestigious ‘Canonne taste’, so faithfully upheld by his heirs. A splendid landscape by Camille Pissarro, an intimate nude by Pierre Bonnard, and a rare series of watercolours by Johan Barthold Jongkind complete this outstanding collection.

Another highlight of the week, the 20th/21st Century Art - Evening Sale will bring together masterpieces of modern and contemporary art. An iconic work by Toulouse-Lautrec and Les Amoureux by Chagall will take centre stage, while Nicolas de Staël’s exquisite Paysage au nuage and Jean Dubuffet’s Prestation de serment will be presented alongside works by Piero Manzoni and Alighiero Boetti in the Thinking Italian section.

Two further sales will bring this landmark auction series to a close. The Art Impressionniste & Moderne session will mark the centenary of Félix Vallotton’s passing and feature works on paper by Pablo Picasso, as well as a rare Suprematist drawing by Kazimir Malevich. Meanwhile, the Art Contemporain sale will showcase works by Anselm Kiefer, Fernando Botero and Germaine Richier, while paying tribute to Jean Paul Riopelle, a key figure of lyrical abstraction.
