Fruit de la quête esthétique et intellectuelle d'un amateur d'art avisé, A Life of Collecting: Works from an Important Private Collection reflète non seulement l'évolution des goûts et des intérêts d'une personne, mais également celle de son milieu culturel. Une sélection d’œuvres issue de ce prestigieux ensemble sera présentées chez Christie's en avril prochain dans le cadre de la semaine 20th/21st Century Paris Sales Week.
On l'ignore souvent mais c'est le cabinet dentaire de ce collectionneur passionné qui fut le véritable point de départ de cette étonnante collection. En effet, de nombreux artistes ont d'abord franchi le seuil de son cabinet en tant que patients ; c'est le plus souvent à la suite de ces rencontres qu’il décida d'acquérir leurs œuvres. Profondément curieux et engagé, ce dentiste atypique a nourri des conversations profondes avec ces artistes, liant souvent avec eux des amitiés durables. En outre, sa maison, qui regorgeait d'œuvres d'art moderne et contemporain, de livres rares et de manuscrits, est également devenue un lieu de rencontre pour des plasticiens parmi les plus influents de l'époque, attirant des figures renommées de l'avant-garde italienne et de l'art contemporain en général.
Avec des œuvres d'Albers, Boetti, de Chirico, Basquiat, Twombly et d'autres, cette collection exceptionnelle témoigne de la passion d'un individu visionnaire; elle constitue un témoignage historique unique, tel un journal intime de ses rencontres avec des artistes et des œuvres d'art qui ont façonné de façon durable le paysage de l'art moderne et contemporain.
‘Ma série de peintures intitulée 'Mobili nella valle (Mobilier dans la vallée)' est née d’une idée qui m’est venue un après-midi à Paris, alors que je me promenais à Saint-Germain, entre la Rue du Dragon et la Rue du Vieux Colombier. Sur le trottoir, devant une boutique de meubles d’occasion, j’ai vu des canapés, des chaises, des armoires, des tables et un portemanteau exposés là, dans la rue.
Se retrouvant ainsi arrachés au lieu sacré où l’homme a toujours cherché le repos – cet endroit que chacun de nous appelle « chez soi » – ces objets, dont la simple vue éveille en nous des émotions et des souvenirs remontant à la plus profonde enfance, m’ont soudain semblé solennels, tragiques, voire mystérieux.
J’ai immédiatement compris comment tirer parti de cette vision, et j’ai commencé à peindre des meubles et des coins de pièces, mais placés au cœur d’une nature vaste et déserte.’

A selection of works from this esteemed grouping are presented at Christie’s this April as part of the 20th/21st Century Paris Sales Week.
The dental practice of this collector proved a surprising yet crucial point of genesis for the wider collection. It was here that he encountered many of the artists—initially crossing his threshold as patients—whose works he later acquired. Deeply curious and intellectually engaged, conversations he shared with these artists about art, life, and creative expression often deepened into lasting friendships and profound regard. His home, brimming with modern and contemporary artworks, interesting frames, rare books and manuscripts, similarly became a meeting place for some of the most influential artists of the day, drawing renowned figures of the Italian avant-garde and international contemporary art sphere.
With works by Albers, Boetti, de Chirico, Basquiat, Twombly and others, this collection stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of a remarkable individual, a vibrant historical record and intimate diary of encounter with artists and artworks which have shaped indelibly the landscape of modern and contemporary art.
'My series of paintings called 'Mobili nella valle (Furniture in the valley)' was engendered by an idea that came to me one afternoon in Paris, as I was walking around Saint Germain between Rue du Dragon and Rue du Vieux Colombier. On the pavement in front of a used furniture shop I saw sofas, chairs, wardrobes, tables and a coat rack displayed there on the street. By finding themselves so removed from the sacred place in which man has always sought repose, the place that each of us calls home, these objects - the mere sight of which arouses feelings and sentiments that delve back to our deepest childhood - suddenly appeared solemn, tragic, even mysterious. I immediately understood how I could take advantage of this vision, and I began painting furniture and the corners of rooms, but set in the middle of vast and deserted Nature'
