The present work depicts a view looking west toward Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul, Turkey), featuring the city's peninsula in the background and the Golden Horn at right. According to Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray, "There are no precedents in Sargent's art for a panoramic view of this type." (John Singer Sargent: Figures and Landscapes, 1883-1899, vol. V, New Haven, Connecticut, 2010, p. 250)

The present work was initially owned by the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, now the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
