The present drawing is a preparatory work for an illustration in Chapter One of the artist's memoir, Drawn from Memory, London, 1957, p. 18.

Septimus was the name of Shepard's childhood tricycle. In his 1957 memoir, Shepard says of it: 'Septimus was my pride and joy. He had arrived, carefully packed, on the tenth of December, my seventh birthday, and been christened Septimus by my father... I would carry him down the front steps and pedal along the Terrace'. The artist then recalls how the family cook would interrupt his fun to summon him to the dining room - 'Tethered to a lamp-post, Septimus would then await his master's pleasure.' (op.cit, pp. 18-19).

For another drawing relating to Drawn from Memory, see lot 168.
