A very rare publication of portraits of the Sultans, all heightened with gold, probably from the press of Tatikian. All the plates, including the last, are numbered. Both Atabey and Blackmer state the final plate is unnumbered, within rules, and without the Turkish caption, but that is not the case in this copy, and indeed Blackmer notes there are likely to be variant copies. Both Blackmer and Atabey note the stylistic differences between this work and other Tatikian productions, but state the work has been attributed to him by the Gennadius Library via a Maggs Bros catalogue of 1915. We have only been able to trace two copies at auction in the past 50 years (RBH/ABSA). Atabey 1198; Blackmer 1886

Folio (323 x 224mm). Lithographic title with text in French and Ottoman Turkish, 2 lithographic tables of contents, one in French, one in Ottoman Turkish, 31 hand-coloured lithographic plates of the sultans, all heightened with gold, numbered 1-31 and with captions in French and Ottoman Turkish (one or two faint spots, mainly confined to tissue guards). Contemporary half roan over orange cartonage boards embossed with a floral design, upper cover with blue paper label set within gilt frame and lettered in gilt, decorative gilt spine with 2 paper labels, one of which printed, the other numbered in manuscript (extremities rubbed, head- and tail more heavily with the tailcap slightly defective, small chip to paper label on upper cover).
