Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Autograph letter signed ('Rich. Wagner') to an unidentified recipient, Bayreuth, 29 November 1878
In French. In purple ink, two pages, 196 x 126mm, bifolium.
Ordering a dress for his wife Cosima from a Paris couturier. Wagner agrees to a suggestion for an outfit in white satin, with the modification that 'I only ask you to cover the bare arms with very rich lace sleeves; also for the scarf ... not to use faille. You will forget nothing for the richness of the trimmings, above the price of 1500 francs. And the fan of feathers?'. He counts on receiving the order by 15 December.
The recipient is likely the Paris couturier Félix, to whom Wagner had written on 18 November with a similar request. Cosima's diary for Christmas Day that year records Wagner's pleasure at her wearing the dress.
