Alors qu’il revient d’un séjour en Bourgogne accompagné de Julie, son épouse, Camille Pissarro écrit dans une lettre à Paul Durand-Ruel le 2 juillet 1898 : « À mon retour, j’irai probablement à Rouen qui m’attire ». L’artiste connaît bien la ville et l’affectionne particulièrement puisqu’il y a déjà séjourné à trois reprises auparavant. Avec vingt tableaux produit en presque trois mois, cette quatrième et dernière campagne à Rouen se définit comme la plus longue et la plus fructueuse de toutes.
Pissarro prend alors pension, comme à son habitude, dans une chambre de l’hôtel d’Angleterre, lui offrant une vue directe et dégagée sur le port fluvial, les quais et le foisonnement de l’activité environnante. Vue sur la gare d’Orléans, Saint-Sever, Rouen fait partie de cette série de vue urbaine réalisée par l’artiste depuis sa fenêtre. Le peintre est fasciné par le spectacle de la ville en mutation et du commerce maritime qui s’offre sous ses yeux. Désireux de retransmettre l’atmosphère des lieux, Pissarro s’évertue à dépeindre les infinies variations de lumière, de brume et de brouillard jusqu’à créer, comme ici, une fusion entre les éléments vaporeux et fluviaux. De peintre de la campagne à peintre de la ville, sans renier son passé, Pissarro se lance à plus de soixante ans dans ces nouveaux projets avec la fraîcheur et la vaillance d’un jeune peintre.

On 2 July 1898, Camille Pissarro wrote to Paul Durand-Ruel on his return from a trip to Burgundy with his wife Julie: "When I get back, I'll probably go to Rouen, which attracts me. The artist knew the city well and was particularly fond of it, having stayed there on three previous occasions. With twenty paintings produced in almost three months, this fourth and final campaign in Rouen was the longest and most fruitful of all.
As usual, Pissarro stayed in a room at the Hôtel d'Angleterre, which gave him a direct, unobstructed view of the river port, the quays and the hustle and bustle of the surrounding activity. Vue sur la gare d'Orléans, Saint-Sever, Rouen is one of a series of urban views painted by the artist from his window. The painter was fascinated by the spectacle of the changing city and the maritime trade before his eyes. Keen to convey the atmosphere of the place, Pissarro strove to depict the infinite variations in light, mist and fog, until, as here, he created a fusion between the vaporous and riverine elements. From country painter to city painter, without denying his past, Pissarro embarked on these new projects at over sixty years of age with the freshness and valour of a young painter.
