Charles Ferdinand Hürten (1818-1901) was an exposition artist for Sèvres, painting at the firm in the years spanning 1846-1859, before gaining employment with W.T. Copeland, where he remained until his retirement in 1897. A frequent exhibitor, he quickly gained renown for his work; in 1874 an Art Journal reporter observed that Hürten 'has no superior in flower painting'. The present vases are possibly from Hürten's French period, as the porcelain bodies appear Parisian in style.
