This playful clock features an infant Bacchus, adorned in a crown of trailing grape vines and seated atop a chariot more reminiscent of a chaise than a battle coach. While the seemingly regal god of wine gazes into the distance, a pair of distracted Billy goats are ostensibly leading, but two putto or bacchantes attempt to keep the vehicle moving forward.
Designed in the goût Étrusque manner fashionable in the 1780s, this piece reinterprets classical gods and figures in an elegant, expressive and dynamic way. Modern archaeological discoveries of ancient Greek and Roman art and objects set fire to the imaginations of Europeans in the 18th century, leading to the popular neoclassical style so typical of the period.
