Strasbourg was renowned in the 18th century for the quality of its gilding which had distinctive green tint. On 30 September 1681, the city recognized the king of France as its sovereign. However, Louis XIV confirmed its privileges, notably that of using a silver title lower than the Parisian title. This allowed a better adhesion of the gold layer on the silver, and allowed Strasbourg to retain its reputation as a gilding center.
The combination of Strasbourg hallmarks and Paris décharge suggest that this écuelle was made and gilded in Strasbourg and retailed in Paris, possibly commissioned to Altenburger by a Parisian goldsmith.
