Presentation copy of the first edition, first issue, inscribed by the author with a masturbatory poem: ‘When I was old enough to learn / To kill the flesh and make it burn / I was stern to the skin and I hurt the bone: / I would not leave my shame alone’. Rolph B4a.

Octavo. Frontispiece after Augustus John (a few minor thumb-marks, light spotting to preliminaries and rear endpaper). Original mauve cloth (cloth a little rubbed and faded, particularly at spine, green paint marks to head of spine and top edge of upper board); original printed dust-jacket supplied from another copy (lightly rubbed, a few tears repaired with tape on reverse, a few spots, spine darkened and with small chip at head); housed in a custom green quarter morocco box. Provenance: Virginia and David Tennant (1917-2003 and 1902-1968, respectively, founders of the Gargoyle Club, Soho; authorial presentation inscription in pencil on front endpaper).
