STOUT, Rex (1886-1975). The League of Frightened Men. New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1935.

First edition in book form of a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone of Detective Fiction, rare in such condition. First serialized across six issues of The Saturday Evening Post in June-July 1935, The League of Frightened Men is the second Nero Wolfe mystery novel. It influenced René Magritte's 1942 painting, Les compagnons de la peur, which bears the title used for the novel’s French translation.

Octavo. Original black cloth, top edge green (light spotting to endpapers, spine slightly rolled, gilt lettering to spine just fading, minor mark to upper board); original pictorial dust-jacket after Winifred Earl Lefferts (spine panel ends a little frayed, four small chips to edges, short closed tear at foot of spine, tape repair at head of spine, some small nicks and creasing).
