RHODE, John (1884-1964; pseudonym for Cecil Street). The Murders in Praed Street. London: Geoffrey Bles, [1928].

First edition of a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone of Detective Fiction in the extremely rare dust-jacket: we are unable to trace any copy in the jacket in auction records. The Murders in Praed Street is one of the earliest novels to centre on the famous detective Dr. Lancelot Priestley, who would ultimately feature in 72 novels over 36 years. It was the basis for the 1936 British crime film Twelve Good Men.

Octavo. (Faint spotting to final two leaves, minor stains to edges.) Original red cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in black, front endpaper reproducing front and rear dust-jacket panels (very minor wear to extremities, small puncture to cloth on upper joint); original pictorial dust-jacket (small chips at head of spine and upper edge of lower panel into one letter, some creased and short repaired tears to spine ends and corners, longer repaired closed tear into upper right of front panel, circular mark on front panel, extremities lightly rubbed).
