Graham Greene
GREENE, Graham (1904-1991). The Power and the Glory. London: William Heinemann, 1934.

Fine first edition, first impression of arguably Greene's masterpiece. A profound exploration of faith, sin, and redemption, ‘The Power and the Glory is a remarkable and convincing amalgam of Greene’s researches, his experiences and his convictions, interpreted by his skill and imagination as a creative writer’ (Sherry, The life of Graham Greene, I p.718). Loosely inserted is a small one-page typed note from the author: ‘Regrets Mr. Graham Greene never gives autographs. And he does not sign books except for his family and close friends. Your book could not be sent to him in France as he cannot be responsible for their return but he has made an exception and signed a piece of paper for you to insert in the book. Please though do not send any more!’ The ‘piece of paper’ is a sheet of Greene’s Antibes letterhead upon which he has written: ‘ For Gareth Pawlowski from Graham Greene.’ Wobbe A6a.

Octavo. (Faint crease from production flaw to first leaf of text pp.3-4, a couple of insignificant spots to fore-edge and bottom edge). Original yellow cloth, publisher’s logo on lower cover and spine lettered in red; original printed dust-jacket (spine slightly browned, rear panel faintly soiled and stained, tiny nicks at head and foot of rear flap creasefold). Provenance: authorial inscription on headed paper and with accompanying typed note to: – Gareth Pawlowski.
