RARE SHIPWRECK CHAMPAGNE
This bottle came from the wreck of a Swedish schooner which was sunk by a German submarine in 1916 just off the Finnish coast. The ship contained 100 bottles of Champagne among its cargo. All this time the bottles remained undisturbed on the bottom of the Baltic sea at a constant 4ºC until they were salvaged in 1998.
Dosage probably between 100-165 grams/liter, almost twice as sweet as Yquem in those days.
During the slow aging the sugar has dropped to about 44grams/liter.
Heidsieck & Co Monopole Goût Américain 1907
Epernay
In individual wooden case. Original certificate and brochure included. Signs of seepage. Wax covered capsule. No label. Level: 8cm below cork.
A bottle was opened at the Christie’s pre-sale tasting in London on 19 October 1998.
Tasting note: Light yellow color with fine mousse still. This slowly disappeared after about 10 minutes in the glass, impressive after all these years. Well matured nose of citrus, hazelnuts and brioche. Quite complex and pure.
Soft sweet taste, fresh, showing some maturity, of course, but all quite remarkably youthful for its age. On the after taste the smooth mouth feel gave the impression of an flower opening on your tongue. Excellent length. Great wine. October 1998. Edwin Vos
Still one of the most unique wines I have tasted.
