After several years away from printmaking Smith decided to approach the medium again, this time experimenting with lithography. Don Quixote was his first effort in the medium and the artist was so anxious to begin the process he did not wish to wait for the master printer Margaret Lowengrund to return to the Woodstock studio, instead entrusting the task to her new assistant Michael Ponce de Léon. The two worked their way through the process and when they required water, which was not available in the studio, they reverted to using the large supply of beer immediately on hand as an alternative.
