Albers' Meander works are derived from a textile work entitled Red Meander, which she created in 1954 as a student of Black Mountain College. Drawing "meandering" patterns was a requirement of design courses and the motif was originally inspired by Greek geometric patterns. The motif also represents Albers' relationship with her husband Joseph and their similar style and interest in color.
