Initié en 1962, le cycle de l’Hourloupe amorce une étape importante dans le travail de Jean Dubuffet. Sur le cours de douze années, l’évolution de son œuvre se fait à l’intérieur d’un système homogène qui trouve son origine dans le dessin, déployé par la suite à la gouache, puis en trois dimensions. Ce sont les stylobilles rouge et bleu de l’artiste qui donnent naissance aux petits dessins qui seront les premières expressions de l’Hourloupe. Le coloriste Dubuffet y fait l’économie de la couleur, dans un travail d’apparence plus dépouillée qu’auparavant, qui se révélera être un véritable aboutissement pour l’artiste.
Avec le cycle de l’Hourloupe, Dubuffet contourne la figuration, nous défiant de distinguer les figures qui se profilent dans ses amoncellements de formes. Le Bar (1965) est un exemple emblématique de ce vocabulaire d’alvéoles labyrinthiques, formant un réseau méandreux de cellules s’épanchant les unes sur les autres. Elles sont cernées de noir, démarquant des espaces striés de rayures colorées qui suggèrent le volume. Les bleus et les rouges s’affrontent sur fond blanc. Les hachures orientées contredisent l’ampleur des formes, démarquant une topographie qui, à l’inverse des traditions de la cartographie, contribuent à l’indistinction des espaces démarqués. Ramenant tout au plan frontal, ces hachures abolissent la perspective, ne tenant nul compte de l’éloignement ou de la proximité des surfaces.
Reconnaissant lui-même un certain malaise à voir la figuration, Dubuffet renonce à l’exigence du mental en faveur d’une « mathématique de l’irrationnel » (J.-F. Jaeger, Dubuffet, Le cycle de l’Hourloupe, Paris, 1976). Des évocations de formes instaurent une uniformisation, un retour au même dénominateur. « Cette écriture uniforme […] tend à opérer une liquéfaction des catégories dont notre pensée fait habituellement usage dans le déchiffrement des faits et des spectacles du monde. À la faveur de quoi la circulation de l’esprit d’un objet à un autre, d’une catégorie à une autre, soit libérée, et grandement accrue sa mobilité » (Jean Dubuffet, Lettre à Arnold Glimcher, Paris, 15 septembre 1969). Les expressions de L’Hourloupe déclenchent effectivement un écroulement de la classification traditionnelle des objets et paysages, entre les notions de bouteille, de chaise, ou celle d’arbre. Leur enveloppe matérielle s’efface devant une production d’espaces de la pensée. Le cycle trouve peut-être ainsi sa racine étymologique dans l’entourloupe, car la tromperie n’est pas loin. Avec l’Hourloupe, nous rentrons à plein corps dans l’imagination de l’artiste, happés par des formes sinueuses aux couleurs vives, qui nous font lâcher prise avec la réalité.
The Hourloupe cycle, which first appeared in 1962, was the beginning of an important stage in Jean Dubuffet's work. Over the course of twelve years, his work evolved within a homogenous system based on drawings, then painted in gouache, and finally created in three dimensions. The artist used his red and blue ballpoint pens to create the small drawings that would be the first expressions of Hourloupe. The colourist Dubuffet used colour very sparingly, in a style of work that was more pared down than before and which would turn out to be a veritable culmination for the artist.
With the Hourloupe cycle, Dubuffet overrode Figuration, challenging us to make out the figures that loomed within his mounds of shapes. Le Bar (1965) is an iconic example of the vocabulary of labyrinthine alveoli, forming a meandering network of cells that flow onto one another. They are contoured in black, delineating zones of coloured stripes that suggest volume. The blues and reds confront each other on a white background. The cross-hatching contradicts the amplitude of the shapes, defining topography that, contradictory to cartographic traditions, contributes to rendering the delineated zones indistinct. Bringing everything to the forefront, these crosshatches eliminate perspective, taking no account of the distance or proximity of the surfaces.
Dubuffet, himself, recognised that he was ill-at-ease at the sight of figuration, and abandoned excessive cerebral demands in favour of "mathematics of the irrational" (J.-F. Jaeger, Dubuffet, Le cycle de l’Hourloupe, Paris, 1976). Impressions of forms establish standardisation, a return to the same denominator. "These unvarying representations […] tend to incur liquefaction of the categories that our thoughts generally use to decipher the world's facts and sights. As a result of which, the circulation of the mind from one object to another, from one category to another, is liberated and its mobility greatly increased" (Jean Dubuffet, Letter to Arnold Glimcher, Paris, 15 September 1969). The Hourloupe's expressions effectively trigger the collapse of the traditional classification of objects and landscapes, between the notions of a bottle, chair, or tree. Faced with the production of spaces in thought, their material envelope disappears. The etymological root of the cycle's name may possibly be found in the French world entourloupe, signifying a mean trick or ruse, as trickery is close to hand. With Hourloupe, we find ourselves fully immersed in the artist's imagination, grasped by sinuous, brightly coloured shapes that make us let go of reality.
