Plus qu’une magnifique démonstration du savoir-faire horloger parisien à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, cette rarissime pendule squelette à planétaire doit être considérée comme le témoignage des aspirations et des inclinations d’une société qui mêlaient alors avec bonheur l’exigence scientifique la plus haute et une recherche esthétique toujours renouvelée. Elle réalise le rêve fou de représenter le système de l’Univers et de concilier en un seul et même chef d’œuvre la vérité du système copernicien, les descriptions de Ptolémée et le recours aux mythes de l’Antiquité grecque et latine.
A la suite des progrès techniques réalisés tout au long du siècle, les horlogers français mettent au point vers 1770 les premiers modèles de pendules dites « squelettes ». Leur particularité est de laisser apparaître, au moyen d’une composition épurée et de cadrans annulaires, la séduisante technicité des rouages et des mouvements. Les ambitions du génie qui mit au point notre pendule dépassent toutefois largement ce stade, exauçant les vœux de siècles de recherches.
Dès l’Antiquité en effet les grecs avaient théorisé la géométrie du ciel : Platon, dans Le Timée préconisait l’usage d’une représentation mécaniques des mouvements célestes, Cicéron lui vantait les travaux d’Archimède sur la sphéropée, ou l’art de la représentation de la sphère céleste au moyen de globes cristallins. Notre pendule suit scrupuleusement ces deux préceptes grâce aux deux merveilles que sont le planétaire et la sphère céleste en verre gravé.
L’invention du planétaire est généralement située entre 1704 et 1709 et attribuée à George Graham. Modélisation tridimensionnelle du système solaire, il adopte généralement la forme d’un axe vertical supportant une sphère représentant le soleil, les planètes montées sur des bras ou des plateaux, se déployant et pivotant pour décrire les courbes synchronisées des planètes. Un planétaire incorpore un mécanisme – ici celui de la pendule – pour conduire une roue d’engrenage entre le soleil et les bras des planètes afin que les corps célestes puissent être mus de façon ordonnée. Didactique et esthétique, le planétaire est devenu un instrument incontournable à la fin du XVIIIe pour les princes et les sociétés savantes.
Quant à la sphère gravée, il a fallu attendre semble-t-il le règne de Charles Quint pour les voir apparaître. En effet, on trouve mention d’un globe céleste réalisé en verre pour l’Empereur par Gérard Mercator en 1552. (A.S. Osley, Mercator, A Monograph on the lettering of Maps, etc. in the 16th century Netherlands, Londres, 1969, p.186.) Il fallut néanmoins attendre quelques progrès techniques pour obtenir d’Outre-Manche les premières sphères gravées. Elles étaient signées John Cowley ou Robert Long et firent leur apparition vers 1720. En France, le pionnier en la matière fut Vaugondy (A. Turner, « Les globes célestes en verre », in La Revue du Musée des arts et métiers, n°14, Paris, 1996, p.52-54).
L’association du planétaire et du globe céleste, mariage idéal de deux instruments au sensationnel résultat esthétique, allait avoir lieu quelque temps après grâce au sieur Leguin, à l’époque même de notre pendule (E. Dekker, Globes at Greenwich : A Catalogue of the Globes and Armillary Spheres in the National Maritime Museum, Oxford, 1999, pp. 237 - 239). Ces globes semblent avoir été produits en toute petite quantité, notamment à cause de la difficulté technique que représente leur exécution. Leur fragilité explique également leur extrême rareté. Citons toutefois le modèle le plus proche, illustré dans A. Turner, op. cit. p.53 et présenté à la Galerie J. Kugel en 2002 (A. Kugel, Sphères, l’art des mécaniques célestes, Paris, 2002, pp. 196-197). Un autre globe en verre probablement un peu plus tardif coiffe une pendule au dessin similaire à celle de la galerie Kugel. Elle est signée de Lepaute et conservée au musée Beyer à Zürich. (Uhrenmuseum Beyer Zürich, Antike Uhren, Neuerwerbugen, Munich, 1996, cat.22, pp. 56-57).
Notre exemplaire se distingue des deux autres modèles par sa structure et son décor unique de trois atlantes supportant le globe. Deux de ces figures sont associées à Atlas, condamné par Zeus à supporter la voûte céleste. Le troisième reconnaissable à la léonté est Hercule. Il s’agit d’une allusion à l’épisode mythologique du jardin des Hespérides où pour permettre au titan d’aller chercher les fruits d’or, le demi dieu le soulagea un temps de son fardeau.

Plato, in the Timaeus, recommended the use of mechanical representation of the movements of the heavens, Cicero praised Archimedes' work on the planetarium, or the art of representing the celestial sphere by means of crystalline globes. Our clock scrupulously follows these two precepts thanks to the two marvels, the planetarium and the celestial sphere in engraved glass.

Nevertheless, it took some time before technical progress made available the first engraved spheres from across the English Channel. They were signed John Cowley or Robert Long and made their appearance towards 1720. In France the pioneer in the area was Vaugondy (A. The association of the planetarium and the celestial globe, an ideal marriage of two instruments with a sensational aesthetic result would take place somewhat later thanks to the Sieur Leguin in the precise era of our clock (E. Our example differs from the other two models in its structure and its unique decoration of three telamon or atlas figures supporting the globe. Two of these figures are associated with Atlas, condemned by Zeus to bear the celestial vault. The third is recognisable as Hercules by the lion skin. This is an allusion to the mythological tale of the Garden of the Hesperides, where, in order to allow the Titan to go to find the golden apples, the demi-god relieved him for a while of his burden
