LES MASQUES TEOTIHUACANLes masques en pierre figurent parmi les productions les plus remarquables et les plus identifiables qui soient réalisées dans des proportions identiques à la réalité. L’utilisation réelle de ces masques dégageant prestance et solennité fait débat et ils incarnent peut-être sous des traits stylisés des divinités importantes ou des souverains du passé, représentés de façon réaliste pour être disposés dans les temples ou transportés lors des cérémonies le long de la Voie Sacrée, cette imposante avenue qui s’étend entre la Pyramide du Soleil et celle de la Lune. Une hypothèse récente suggère aussi que ce type de masque ait pu être placé sur les dépouilles mortuaires de l’élite sociale.TEOTIHUACAN MASKSStone masks are among the most distinctive and iconic portable stone artifacts from the temple-city. These idealized and dramatic masks were made in a variety of stones and proportions. The function of these bold and sculptural masks has been oft-debated, perhaps these were idealized representations of significant deities or powerful ancestors, attached to their perishable effigies, and displayed in temples, or transported in ceremonies along the Via Sacra, the imposing corridor between the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. A newer concept suggests that the masks were affixed to mortuary bundles of elite personages.
