The combination of walled ponds and trees in this painting is strongly reminiscent of Nash’s 1923 oil Walled Pond, Little Bredy, Dorset, in Aberdeen Art Gallery. The dating is more problematic: the present work may possibly be a study for the 1923 painting, but it is more likely to be a later version of the same subject, as we know that Nash re-visited Little Bredy on other occasions.
We are very grateful to Andrew Lambirth for preparing this catalogue entry.
