Peter Schemm, who owned this painting around the turn of the century, was the owner of an eponymous Philadelphia brewery which had been founded by his father, a German emigré. Shemm's art collection was one of the best known in Philadelphia at the time, and the several hundred canvases he owned were housed in a specially-built gallery that was connected to his brewery at 25th and Poplar streets.
