Alberto Giacometti developed his unmistakeable style of long and slender figures in the late 1940’s. The majority of these sculptures are based upon his brother Diego Giacometti (1902-1985) and his wife, Annette Arm (1923-1993). The male figures are most often walking, while the female figures are standing. The Figurines were the forerunners of the series Femme de Venise and they portray the critical point of departure for Giacometti’s experimental creative phase with the feminine form and his characteristic manipulation of the surface. They represent Giacometti’s grappling with the themes of loneliness, strength and vulnerability, as well as with human existence in general.
