Cette aquarelle est à mettre en relation avec Aube, souvenir des Alpes, datée 1880 et conservée au Musée Saint-Denis de Reims (inv. 880.14 ; Gustave Doré. Un peintre-né, cat. exp., Bourg-en-Bresse, Monastère Royal de Brou, 2012, n°31, ill.) Un autre paysage de montagne, Les Alpes et le Lac Léman près de Glion, datée 1879, reprenant ce thème des sapins accrochés aux rochers avec les montagnes à l'arrière-plan, est conservé au Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg (inv. n°55.992.13.42 ; Doré, l'imaginaire au pouvoir, cat; exp., Paris, musée d'Orsay, Ottawa, Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada, 2014, n° 194).
Heir to Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich, Gustave Doré made this watercolour probably in 1877, perhaps with a future canvas in mind, called Dawn. Souvenir of the Alps from 1880, now at Musée Saint-Denis de Reims (inv. 880.14; see Gustave Doré. Un peintre-né, exhib. cat., Bourg-en-Bresse, Monastère royal de Brou, 2012, no. 31, ill.). In the paintings as well as in the present drawing, the fir trees at the centre of the composition stand against the background of a pink sky, starting to light the landscape. Another mountainscape, The Alps and Lake Geneva near Glion, dated 1879, also show trees on rocks with the mountains in the background, and is in the collection of the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain in Strasbourg (inv. 55.992.13.42; Doré. L'imaginaire au pouvoir, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée d’Orsay, Ottawa, National Gallery of Canada, 2014, no. 194).
