Plus connu pour ces tableaux à sujets guerriers dont les commandes de Louis-Philippe pour les galeries historiques de Versailles, Horace Vernet étonne ici avec cette étude. Le sujet, original et anecdotique, est traité avec brio : la luminosité, le cadrage et l'utilisation de cet harmonieux camaïeu de brun en font une feuille à part dans son œuvre graphique habituellement tourné vers le monde équestre et oriental. Il n'est pas sans rappeler l'original tableau (détruit) d'Eugène Delacroix représentant l'intérieur de L'Appartement du Comte de Momay, daté des mêmes années 1832-1833 ; une aquarelle de Delacroix de même sujet est conservée au Musée du Louvre (inv. no. RF 9293 ; voir M. Sérullaz, Inventaire général des dessins. École Française. Dessins d'Eugène Delacroix, Paris, 1984, I, no. 169, ill.).
This drawing is an exception in the œuvre of Horace Vernet, who is better known for his military paintings, such as a commission from Louis-Philippe for Versailles. Its original subject is rendered with great verve: the rendering of light, mise-en-cadre and quality of execution make it stand out among his depictions of horses and the orient. It reminds one of Eugène Delacroix’ (destroyed) picture representing the interior of the apartment of the count de Mornay, also dated to 1832-1833; a watercolour by of the same subject is at the Musée du Louvre (inv. RF 9293; see M. Sérullaz, Inventaire général des dessins. École Française. Dessins d'Eugène Delacroix, Paris 1984, vol. 1, no. 169, ill.).
