RASMUSSEN, Knud (1879-1933). Report of the Fifth Thule Expedition 1921-24: the Danish Expedition to Arctic North America in Charge of Knud Rasmussen, Ph. D. Copenhagen: Gyldendfal Nordisk, 1927-45.
A complete and partially unopened set in original wrappers of the first edition of the scientific reports from Rasmussen and Freuchen’s legendary three year expedition, with presentation inscriptions from the author on two vols. Published in English, the work is a landmark study of Inuit culture. Rasmussen was part Inuit, and is known today as the “Father of Inuitology” for his contributions to the field. Thirty-five parts in twenty-seven volumes, quarto (273 x 177mm). 396 plates and maps, many folding, some loose in rear folder, as issued (first gathering of one vol. sprung, possibly never bound in); copious in-text illustrations, partially unopened. Original taupe printed wrappers (modest sunning, removed labels, one spine taped). Provenance: Dr. Clark Wissler (1870-1947, American anthropologist and eugenicist; presentation inscription from the author on 2 vols) – James A. Ford (1911-1968, American archaeologist known for his work on Native American mound builders; signatures on 2 vols) – The James A.
