Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967)
Property from the Collection of Jacqueline de Rothschild PiatigorskyChristie’s is honored to present for sale two Zadkine bronzes from the collection of Jacqueline de Rothschild Piatigorsky. It is very fitting that both of these bronzes depict cellists, as she was the late wife of legendary cellist and avid art collector Gregor Piatigorsky. Their collection was comprised of works by Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Chaïm Soutine among others, as well as an Alexej von Jawlensky which will be offered in our November 13th Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale. A selection of works from the collection was exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2003. Curator Katie Rothkopf has said about Piatigorsky’s collecting: “He fell in love with what he saw. He loved color, he loved line, he loved exuberance. He loved seeing the artists’ personality in the art” (quoted in S. Stamberg, “Gregor Piatigorsky, A Musician's Love of Art,” NPR, 29 April 2003).Property from the Collection of Jacqueline de Rothschild Piatigorsky
