Established in 1996 in Yogyakarta, Jendela group ground-breaking artworks intrigues the norms with cutting-edge techniques and concepts at that present time. Handiwirman established the group together with Jumaldi Alfi, Mohammad Irfan, Rudi Mantofani Yuniar as well as Yusra Martinus. Handiwirman himself was studying art in Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta before starting his artistic exploration through Jendela group.
With his works, Handiwirman questions the social perception of objects and material culture. In Dalam Tampak Luar – Cookies (Cookies - Inside Out) the artist analyze the idea of intimacy by painting ‘disfigured’ inner part of an object. With this concept in mind, the series of works done in the Dalam Tampak Luar series serve to re-construct the logic of alignment, integration, reversion as well as resistance. In this series of work, the artist also explores different approaches to his concept of intimacy, with different types of materials denoting the idea of transparency - One of them is Dalam Tampak Luar – Luar Tampak Dalam (Inside Looking [Like] Out – Outside Looking [Like] In) installation. By using clear acrylic lightly enveloping the two main subject in resin the artwork exuding clarity, Handiwirman retains the original form of his subjects, enabling the viewer to interact and see within the appearance of the subject.
In contrary, Dalam Tampak Luar – Cookies (Cookies - Inside Out) offers a different side of a subject as articulated through his series title, Inside Out. Through this intriguing painting, Handiwirman showcase a process of creation originated from the intimacy of interactions with objects, processing and re-creating the surface and forms. Dalam Tampak Luar – Cookies (Cookies - Inside Out) indicates the distinct contrast between two characteristics of an object, the inside and the outside, as well as presenting another aspect that an object can offer – It is a humble yet powerful work with an honest expressions of the true nature of one’s being.
