A graduate from Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, Ichwan Noor is regarded as one of most proficient Indonesian artists in creating larger-than-life 3 dimensional sculptures. Noor gain his comprehension on sculpture-making as he assisted other artists. His prolific technical skill in making 3 dimensional sculptures allows him to explore on different kind of materials used for his works, such as bronze, aluminum, and resin. In his own studio Noor would honed his mastery in exploring the many types of materials, and accuracy in calculating the structure and recognizing the various forms. Besides exploring on the anatomy of human figure, Noor is also often presented technological objects in his work. For his outstanding ability, Noor is known as ‘The Maker’ amongst his contemporaries.
“The idea emerged from a personal perception towards objects that are products of a ‘transport culture’, which induces hint or signs of spiritual emotion. To behold a vehicle (car) is to have a ‘magical’ (supernatural) identity. Sculpture represent the interaction between humans and the object realm, with strong spiritual tension that affects the subconscious, and that yields a new ‘animistic’ attitude.”
Beetle Sphere (Lot 191) is a part of series work of reconstruction of VW Beetle car with its new rounded appearance through manipulation and substitution. Christie’s is proud to present the Artist Edition of this remarkable piece. To achieve the perfect spherical form, Ichwan Noor combines part of the actual 1953 VW Beetle with polyester and aluminum.
