With Patek Philippe Certificat d'Origine stamped Patek Philippe S.A., Salons de Genève, dated 6 September 2008, and Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with white lacquered dial, Black Breguet numerals and 1 diamond approx. 0.02 ct in 2008 and its subsequent sale on 6 September 2008.

Consigned by the descendants of the original owner and fresh to the market, this reference 5959 is believed to be one of only seven examples of the model with white dial to appear in public to date. Although still listed in Patek Philippe's catalogues, reference 5959 is already today considered a classic amongst collectors.

Launched in 2005, reference 5959 was fitted with the new calibre CHR 27-525 PS, Patek Philippe's first completely in-house designed and manufactured chronograph movement. Featuring a 60 minutes register instead of Patek Philippe's better known 30 minutes, it is furthermore the world's thinnest column-wheel chronograph wristwatch. Exclusively cased in platinum, the first series was available with white dial and black Breguet numerals, followed by a black metal dial version with applied white gold Breguet numerals launched in 2008.

Of outstanding mechanical complexity, the split seconds chronograph mechanism is one of the most challenging horological complications and consequently highly coveted amongst collectors. Reference 5959 pays tribute to Patek Philippe late 1920s production of complicated wristwatches, a time of historically important horological developments. It features an "Officier" case with wire lugs, its movement is Patek Philippe's first entirely in-house chronograph calibre CHR 27-525 PS. Using superior German silver, it impresses with 252 parts and a record-breaking size for this complication: with a diameter of only 27.3 mm and a thickness of 5.25 mm, it is the thinnest column-wheel controlled split seconds chronograph ever made.
