Polígrafa Obra Gràfica, known as Polígrafa, was founded in 1964 by Manuel de Muga and
celebrates 50 years of fne printmaking in a variety of media, from aquatint, etching, woodcut,
lithography and screenprinting to contemporary 3D multiples.
In the 1970s Joan de Muga, son of the founder, opened Polígrafa's own workshop and
started working with some of most recognisable masters of twentieth century European
printmaking, such as Joan Miró, Henry Moore, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Eduardo
Chillida and Antoni Tàpies.
Further to the family’s extensive work with Spanish artists, a new wave of Latin American artists
found their voice on the international stage in the Post War years. Rufno Tamayo, Fernando
de Szyslo, Carlos Cruz Díez and Guillermo Kuitca, to name a few, have all collaborated with
Polígrafa in several projects over the years. International artists such as Francis Bacon, Helen
Frankenthaler, Christo and Zao Wou-ki were also drawn to work with the Muga family in their
Barcelona print studio and were accomplished in a variety of media.
The selection of works offered here is a glimpse of the diversity of styles and techniques
undertaken by 55 artists in collaboration with Polígrafa. As many artists returned to work
again and again with the Muga family, their prints appear in different sections defned by
each of the fve decades. Most noticeable is the repeated collaboration of Christo, Joan Miró,
Antoni Tàpies and Rufno Tamayo.
Current business partners Joan de Muga, José Aloy, and Álvaro Puigdengolas continue the
business, inviting artists to the workshop in Barcelona to develop new projects with other
renowned contemporary artists. At the moment they are working in projects with Keith Tyson,
Jessica Stockholder, Ross Bleckner; Massimo Bartolini, Tunga, Marco Maggi and Shary Boyle.
