Michael Gyselynck, when discussing this work, observed that it has features which are at variance with those generally associated with the series of images by John Piper which are usually described as Foliate Heads. Noticing that it has a certain allure, he suggested that it shows a woman's face and hair, with the suggestion of femininity accentuated by the floral motifs. As the work is partly executed in collage it may have been intended as a design suitable for interpretation as a stained glass window or a tapestry.
