We are grateful to Professor Mauro Lucco for suggesting the attribution on the basis of photographs (private communication, 9 April 2013). Born in Friesland, Dirck de Vries was working in Venice by 1587. Having trained with Pauwels Franck, de Vries specialized in still life paintings of vegetable and fish markets.
