Her works stage the shift in the spectators mind from consciousness of the pictorial scene to consciousness of the process that created it, and deftly evoke the sense of melancholy that accompanies this course which is, in the end, one of literal disillusionment. Oscillating between abstraction and figuration, van Lankvelds paintings present Old Masterish compositions which appear, just barely, as blurry phantasms
