Cox executed a drawing of Kenilworth as early as 1804, and it is reported that at that date he apparently cut his name into one of the old staircases in the Castle (N. N. Solly, Memoir of the Life of David Cox, 1873, p. 11). A watercolour of Kenilworth Castle was also among the very last works he ever exhibited, in 1859 (Solly, op. cit., p. 293).
