"If the color of Pang Jiun's still life paintings is characterized by glitter and fullness, the color in his landscape paintings is characterized by elegance and implication. When we compare his landscape with his still lifes, we feel surprised that such distinctly different color tunes come from the same artist, which is expressed by high intenseness in depicting his still lifes and peaceful calmness, even close to solitude, in his landscape paintingsK When an artist uses oil or writing brushes to describe the mild and misty impressions of southern China, like his predecessors, no matter whether depicting the high mountains or long rivers, out pours his love of his homeland. In these works we not only perceive the change of a veteran artist from splendour to ordinary but also the influence of the traditional artistic spirit on Chinese literati. "

Pang Jiun was trained as a realistic oil painter, yet he progressively abandoned this traditional style and worked towards the spirit of "freehand brushwork" and "vivid tone" in oil paintings. By the River (Lot 2198) and Gulangyu, Xiemen (Lot 2199) are the recent works of the artist, which describe the misty and rainy Jiangnan landscape. The artist expressed the poetic feeling of Chinese literati in his works; he never makes any correction, but completing his strokes in one go, therefore developing a vivid Chinese style. The picture is not depicted through a conventional rendering of light and shadow, but instead is structured by space and vivid colours, full of the movement of air and silence. Whether it be a tranquil moment of the boatman on the canal, or a magnificent paranormal of the river have been brought to the audience subtly and impressively. Pang Jiun's oil paintings are appreciated as the "unique expressionism of oriental humanity", testimony to his unique style and artistic achievement.
