Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, points out that this painting can be compared to the painting by Roepel in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. A 336), dated 1721. What may appear to be a loosely arrangement of flowers is in fact carefully composed by the artist. Roepel lets his flowers, especially the brightly lit white and pink roses in the centre, stand out against the dark background, creating a voluminous effect in the composition.
