Abu al-Qasim "Jarallah" Mahmoud b. 'Umar al-Zamakhshari (AH 538- 467/1075-1144 AD) was born in al-Jurjaniya, Khwarazm. Zamakhshari was renowned for his great scholarship of the Qur'an and his mastery of the Arabic language. His works expounded Mu'tazilite theology, but often were tempered by his own concepts and opinions.

His monumental work al-Kashaf 'an haqa'iq al-tanzil wa 'uyun al-aqawil fi wujuh al-ta'wil, commonly known as al-Kashaf al-Tafsir, completed in 1134 AD, is celebrated for its genius and linguistic depth. He had previously written the highly acclaimed Al-Mufassal . He travelled abroad greatly, but stayed in Mecca for such a long period that he earned the nickname Jarallah ("neighbour of God"). He died in his birthplace of al-Jurjaniya
