Related to Gericault's lithograph of the same subject. The young mother was married to a bootmaker who owned a flat that the artist was renting while he lived in England. The original lithographic cardboard is in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (Bazin, , no. 1823), and there are two other preparatory drawings related to the composition (Bazin, , nos. 1824, 1826).
