Doña Polissena was the daughter of the Genoese General Ambrogio Spinola. She moved from her native Genoa to Madrid to become a lady-in-waiting to Queen Isabel in 1622, where she married Diego Felípe de Guzmán in 1628. Guzmán, the Marquis of Leganés, was the captain of the Spanish cavalry and artillery in the Low Countries and also sat for van Dyck. The portrait by van Dyck in the Prado, Madrid (204 x 130 cm.) is the prototype for the present picture and was painted in Genoa in the early 1620s.
