THE BAUM FAMILY COLLECTION, CHICAGO
First as an amateur photographer, later as a collector, and ultimately as a dealer, my father had a passion for the power of great photography. He possessed an uncanny eye and championed work that captured a time and a place, William Klein's New York and Cartier-Bresson's Paris. Primarily collecting black and white vintage prints, my father gathered together indelible images of the human condition. In addition to working with historically important works, he also represented photographers, including the great Helen Levitt and Chicago stalwart, Barbara Crane. At a time well before websites and blogs, Stuart published a photography newsletter. He delighted in sharing updates about auctions, gallery and museum shows, and the careers of his artists. After his death in 1993, my mother, Iris, took over the business, continuing to both collect work and represent artists. Her personable manner and zeal for introducing great work to new collectors made her an especially beloved figure in the Chicago photography world. The Baum Collection is on extended loan to the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College where there is also a memorial photography scholarship in my parents' name. (Leslie Baum)
