We are grateful to Professor David Solkin for suggesting that this picture dates from the mid-1740s and for comparing it stylistically to An extensive Welsh landscape with cottages near a lake (sold Christie's, London, 18 April 1996, lot 24). Constable (op.cit.), notes that the view has traditionally been described as the Severn Valley, but the specific location remains unidentified. We are also grateful to Dr Paul Spencer-Longhurst for his thoughts on the picture.
