The sitter, who was the grandson of Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds (1632-1712), one of the leading political figures in the reign of King Charles II, succeeded his father as the 3rd Duke of Leeds in 1729. He married first Elizabeth Harley, daughter of Robert, 1st Earl of Oxford, by whom he had a son Thomas, who succeeded him as the 4th Duke of Leeds; secondly Lady Anne Seymour, daughter of Charles, 6th Duke of Somerset; and thirdly Juliana Hele, daughter and co-heir of Roger Hele, of Holwell, Devonshire.
