'Ein Meister der abstrakten Kunst', so wird Hans Erni im Katalog zur Retrospektive zum 100. Geburtstag im Kunstmuseum Luzern genannt (bis 4. Oktober 2009). Das Oeuvre von Hans Erni aus den dreissiger Jahren stellt nicht nur eine wichtige Periode in seinem künstlerischen Werdegang dar, sondern ist gleichzeitig interessantes Zeugnis der Anfänge der abstrakten Malerei. In dieser Zeit signiert Erni mit dem Pseudonym 'Francois Grèques' und verweist damit sowohl auf die französische Formenwelt als auch auf die griechische Kultur in seinem Werk. Hans Erni hielt sich in den Jahren 1930-1933 immer wieder in Paris auf. In der Seine-Metropole kam er mit der zeitgenössischen französischen Malerei in Kontakt, lernte u.a. Hans Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian und Henry Moore kennen und begann unter dem Eindruck von Picasso und Braque ab 1933 abstrakt zu malen. Er wurde Mitglied der Künstlergruppe Abstraction-Création, 1937 war er Mitbegründer der Künstlervereinigung ALLIANZ, der auch Max Bill und Hans Hinterreiter angehörten. Bereits Ende der dreissiger Jahre wandte sich Erni von der abstrakten Kunst ab, um zu einer gegenständlichen Malerei zurückzukehren und das monumentale Wandbild Die Schweiz, das Ferienland der Völker für die Landesausstellung in Zürich zu schaffen. Alle Werke von Hans Erni (Lose 113-128) werden zu Gunsten einer gemeinnützigen Stiftung zur Unterstützung des kulturellen Lebens in Luzern verkauft. 'A master of the abstract art', refers to Hans Erni in the catalogue for the retrospective for his 100th birthday in the Kunstmuseum Luzern (until 4 October 2009). The oeuvre of Hans Erni from the thirties does not only represent an important period in his artistic career, but is at the same time interesting evidence of the beginnings of abstract painting. During this time, Erni signed with the pseudonym 'Francois Grèques' and it refers both to the French forms and to the Greek culture in his work. Hans Erni was from 1930 to 1933 often in Paris. In the sprawling city on the banks of the Seine, he came into contact with contemporary French painting and became acquainted with Hans Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Henry Moore, among others. Starting in 1933, under the impression of Picasso and Braque, he began to paint abstract. He became a member of the group of artists called Abstraction-Création. In 1937 he was co-founder of the artist coalition ALLIANZ, to which Max Bill and Hans Hinterreiter also belonged. By end of the thirties Erni turned away from abstract art in order to return to figurative painting and conceive the monumental mural Die Schweiz, das Ferienland der Völker for the national exhibition in Zurich. The sale of all the works by Hans Erni (lots 113-128) will benefit a non-profit foundation which supports cultural life in Lucerne.
