The snow-covered mountain over 3000 meters high is brightly lit by the morning sun, while the valley lies in shadowed darkness. From Giovanni Giacometti's Registro dei quadri we find that the work was sold by the Geneva gallery Moos for 800 Swiss francs in the spring 1918. The whereabouts of the painting were unclear since then. Today we know that Mattino d'inverno arrived in 1924 as a wedding gift into the family of the today's owner.
