MINING THE GOLD-BEARING QUARTZ VEINS IN SONORA. The small but highly detailed contour "Map of Sonora & Southern Mines" depicts settlements on the San Joachin River (Stockton, Stanislaus, Tualumne) and the gold camps at Sonora, Mariposa and Quartzberg. The anonymous author, in "Remarks" acknowledges the rich "yield of gold in California, from river washings," requiring scant equipment, while far more gold may be found in the region's "rich auriferous veins of quartz," requiring significant machinery to extract. See Streeter sale 2723 for a later issue (24pp., different office address, but with the same map). Not in Cowan; Sabin 86975. For map see Wheat Maps 233. Rare.
