Russia, late 19th century
Of bulbous form, comprising a decanter and seven glasses, the former with a detachable stopper painted with a stylized flower, each enamelled in blue, red and green with geometric borders and a Russian drinking adage, within gilt and white pellet borders, apparently unmarked
Decanter 5½ in. (14 cm.) high
The inscription on the decanter translates as:
'The best is to drink water which has been transformed into vodka'.
The translated adages on the glasses include:
'Alcohol paints your heart and face red'
'Drinking a lot will not bring you anything good'
'For your health!'
'You want or not- you need to drink with us!'
'Not to drink means not to like your host!'
'Let's drink another one!' (8)
