In 1906 Jan Sluijters returned to Amsterdam after a long stay in Paris. During 1906 and 1907 Sluijters painted the outskirts of Amsterdam on several occasions. Just like George Breitner, Jan Sluijters was fascinated with the fast urbanization of the city. Sluijters was very charmed by places where old and new developments came together. 17th century mills still in use, such as 'de Otter', 'de Luipaard' and others, were the subject of several of his paintings, always placed in an atmospheric light, painted with a sketchy almost Fauve brushstroke. Around 1907 he developed a bright palette of colours. The subject in the present lot is very different from his sunlit landscapes and the elegant women for which he was famous, but also in his cityscapes Sluijters shows his great talent as a colourist.
Plastic surgeon Dr. J.F.S. Esser (1877-1946) was one of the first collectors of work of the so called Amsterdam luminist painters (Leo Gestel, Piet Mondriaan and Jan Sluijters). From 1907 onward he purchased an extensive collection of more than 200 works by Jan Sluijters.
