William Robinson Leigh traveled throughout the west in 1921 while on his honeymoon with his second wife, Ethel Traphagen. Their trip took the couple into Wyoming, Arizona, and Utah, where Leigh visited the Rainbow Bridge. The dramatic and unique natural structure inspired the artist to complete several studies of the landscape at various times of day in both sunlight and moonlight and would remain an inspirational subject matter for Leigh throughout his career.
