Jean-Baptiste Huet was a painter and engraver whose compositions display the high degree of finish one would expect from an artist well-versed in the print medium. His work in the petit manière of genre painting was strongly influenced by François Boucher, a friend of the artist. Huet was approved (agréé) by the Académie Royale in 1768 and exhibited regularly at the Salon until 1789.

A second version of the present landscape was sold at Hôtel Drouet, Paris, in 1911.
